Finding Stuff

The first time you start the application, there will already be a few actions, projects and contexts created for you. You can use those to get familiar with the application, but you can of course delete them at any point, if you wish.

There is a menu area at the top of the screen. You can navigate to pages that list all the projects, contexts or lists you have created by clicking one of these links: List Page Links

If you know the name of the project, list, context, or next action that you would like to open, use the quick search links:

Quick Search

Each link will open a search box that allows you to quickly find what you need. You can also access the search boxes via the following keyboard shortcuts:

  • a - Next actions

This dialog allows you to find any next action in the system. You can start typing any words or characters that appear in the action name in the "Find" box.

Next Action Search Dialog

You can filter the actions by selecting a project or a context as well.

Finally, you can choose to include completed actions by ticking the checkbox (which is conveniently placed so you can simply shift-tab to it).

The other things you can find quickly in this way are:

  • p - Projects
  • c - Contexts
  • l - Lists

Ninja Technique - Search filters

All of the drop-downs and search boxes in What's Next support a filtering algorithm similar to TextMate or Quicksilver. What this means is that the text you enter in the action search box for example is matched against every action name to find the best match. The characters you type in the filter can occur anywhere in the action name - they don't have to be at the start! So if you type "earwn", this will happily match "Learn to use What's Next"

Smart Searches

To get a list of the first 10 possibilities, simply press down arrow, even without entering a filter term.
